It’s just something I’ve been taught. I had a Malaysian teacher in Iceland, but with something like that I think the biggest discoveries you make on your own. Obviously it’s a defense thing, but it’s very focused. It basically aims to kill in one hit, but it’s a lot about breathing. It allows you to use oxygen as a fuel for what you do. It’s one of the few physical things that’s good to teach singers to breathe and run at the same time. So it’s really good for gigs.

” It’s funny touring Volta now, because already in my head I’m moving towards my next project. Because emotionally, Volta’s songs are so huge. And although it is a lot about me being in a woman some ways, Volta is quite macho too, like a warrior. I’m not feeling the warrior any more. I’ve done that. My next project’s going to be less interested in hooliganism. There’ll still be brass, lots of brass, but maybe taking it to more chocolatey places. I have periods when I’m hungry for something new. I’m quite hungry right now. And then I have periods when I’m more domestic. I kind of make fun of my hunger on the new album in a track called “Wanderlust.” It’s about the state of looking for something and almost knowing you’re never going to find it

In the first years of my solo career – the period around Debut – I wasn’t able to record a dark or sad song. You have to know, I was raised hardcore happy. That’s something typically Icelandic: to be happy, to feel good, to see everything from the positive side. So it took me a lot of courage to try something moody. On Debut it didn’t work, on Post it did, eventually. Possibly Maybe was my first dark song.

In de eerste paar jaar van haar solo carriere (de periode dat ze Debut maakte) kon ze geen donker of verdrietig liedje maken. Ze was hardcore happy opgevoed, dat is iets typisch van IJsland; iedereen moet naar blij & gelukkig zijn, alles van de positive kant bekijken. Het heeft haar veel moeite gekost om een humeurig liedje te maken. Op Debut werkte het niet, op Post wel, haar eerste ‘donkere’ song was Possibly maybe
