Vespertine: Pagan Poetry
Pagan Poetry is geschreven en geproduceerd door Björk zelf. Het is het 2de nummer wat als single uitgebracht werd van haar album Vespertine. De clip is gemaakt door Nick Knight, welke overigens daarvoor al eens de foto van Björk maakte die op de cover van Homogenic pronkt.
Een kort interview met haar over dit nummer en de clip:

That’s probably the only song that’s full-bodied, with blood and muscle.
There’s something rather uncomfortable about the experience of that song. It feels like an invasion of your privacy.
Yeah. Hmmmm. I don’t know. When I hear that sort of stuff in other people’s work, I usually find it quite rewarding, so I wouldn’t look at it as uncomfortable. I would say that’s generous. But it’s about wanting to communicate, for sure. It’s less cocoon-ish than the rest of the songs. It’s definitely wanting to tell someone something.
An obvious question, then. Who are you referring to?
[Coquettishly] It’s so obvious, innit?

[Smiling] I didn’t say a word.
Homogenic: Bachelorette
Het nummer Bachelorette staat op het album ‘Homogenic’. De clip zelf vond ik altijd erg mooi, maar met name haar geweldig aparte jurk, aan de voorkant een jurk, aan de achterkant een spijkerbroek! Het nummer was ook een van de eerste singles die uitgebracht werd van dit album.
“Isobel decides to return to the city and to take a train, like in the 30′s, in South America somewhere. She decides to confront love with love and confronts the cowards that don’t have the guts to fall in love with love. So you see – it’s like Isobel has returned. “
Bachelorette is the sequel in this epic tale written by Björk with lyrics by Sjón. Released on her third album “Homogenic”, it was also chosen as one of the first singles. A tall adventure. Produced by Björk. The video to the song was realised by – once again – Michel Gondry, who now had done 6 videos for Björk.
En nog een quote van Björk, ze wilde dat het een erg mooi verhaal werd, daarom vroeg ze haar vriend Sjón (dichter) om te helpen..
Because I wanted the lyrics to be so epic, I got my friend Sjón – who’s a poet in Iceland – to write them. We sat together at the kitchen table and drank a lot of red wine and I told him the whole story for hours and days and he wrote the words from that story.
De Clip
Volta: Declare Indepence
Groot in het nieuws was dit nummer, toen Björk in China was geweest voor een concert en na dit nummer riep ‘Tibet – Tibet!’.
Björk over het incident:
I have been asked by many for a statement after dedicating my song ‘Declare Independence’ to both Kosovo and Tibet on different occasions. I would like to put importance on that I am not a politician, I am first and last a musician and as such I feel my duty to try to express the whole range of human emotions. The urge for declaring independence is just one of them but an important one we all feel at some times in our lives. This song was written more with the personal in mind but the fact that it has translated to its broadest meaning, the struggle of a suppressed nation, gives me much pleasure.
I would like to wish all individuals and nations good luck in their battle for independence.

Toen ze het nummer schreef vond ze het eigenlijk gewoon een enorm geestig nummer, niets politiek corrects ofzo:
I was writing it thought it was hilarious – it’s like if you’re friend is heartbroken by a girl and she’s upsetting him, you can shout at him, declare independence! Don’t let her do that to you! Like those country and western songs with really strong lyrics, but kind of punk, when the words don’t fit to the song. People don’t realise the humour in those clashes I do!
Debut: Venus as a Boy
Björks keuken moet er iniedergeval in 2001 nog ongeveer zo kleurrijk uitgezien hebben zoals in deze clip, dit zei ze namelijk in het Nylon Magazine destijd. Ook gaf ze aan dat veel van de keuken attributen in deze clip uit haar eigen keuken komen. Deze clip begint met een rauw ei, en eindigt met een gebakken eitje: Venus as a Boy.
Ze heeft dit nummer vermoedelijk in haar huiskamer in IJsland geschreven, en ze heeft het toen opgenomen op haar recorder. Later was ze verschillende opnames/geluiden aan het terug luisteren en toen hoorde ze een geluid van een gebroken fles. Het geluid paste er leuk bij en het nummer werd uiteindelijk heel anders dan oorspronkelijk bedoelt. Het nummer is als een van de laatste nummers van Debut opgenomen. Het nummer gaat over een specifiek persoon, maar ze is altijd heel beschermend, ze verteld de pers eigenlijk nooit over wie een bepaald nummer gaat, maar ze verteld het de persoon zelf altijd wel.

Videoclips geupdate
Ik zag de laatste dagen dat er wat videoclips van Youtube verdwenen waren, dus deze moesten weer vervangen worden met de werkende versies.
Op Dailymotions hebben de webmasters van Björk zelf een officele videoclip verzameling die gelukkig niet steeds verwijderd worden, alleen vorig jaar stond daar nog niet alles op. Maar zo te zien hebben ze niet stil gezeten en staat er nu bijna geen enkele clip niet op! Dus Hoeraaay voor Björk.. En je kunt ook zelf een kijkje aldaar nemen natuurlijk!

Post: I Miss you
Deze videoclip is geregisseerd door John Kricfalusi, wel bekend van Ren & Stimpy.
Björk was een Ren & Stimpy fan, John had dat ergens gelezen. Daarop volgend heeft hij met haar manager gebeld om tickets en een backstage pas te krijgen. Na de show is hij backstage gegaan, en ze zaten toen eigenlijk een beetje elkaar aan te staren en waren erg onwennig en verlegen omdat ze alle twee fan van elkaars werk waren. Toen pakte hij eenfyler entekende achterop Björk, dansend met Jimmy ‘the idiot boy’. Björk begon daarop te lachen en John vroeg haar toen ‘You wanna make a video’, waarop zij antwoordde ‘Ok’.. en dat is het begin van de clip!
Björk over dit nummer: ‘Het gaat niet specifiek over een persoon omdat het gaat over iemand die ik nog nooit ontmoet hebt. Het is een beetje als uit kijken naar iets wat nog niet is gebeurt’

Greatest hits: It’s in Our hands
Deze clip is geregiseerd door Spike Jonze, die deed ook samen met haar ‘It’s oh so Quiet’ & ‘Triumph of a heart’. Deze clip is opgenomen in Engeland, ‘s nachts in een bos, dmv een camera met night vision.

- It was nice to do a full-blooded song after doing a whole album that didn’t have any blood in it, though that was the point with Vespertine, that it was see-through like a crystal. When we played it live, we were all looking forward to rocking out.

Post: Hyperballad
Een van mijn favoriete nummers van Björk is Hyperballad.
Het nummer staat op het album Post wat uitgebracht is in 1995.
Hoe Björk denkt over het nummer word duidelijk in enkele quotes:
- “It was inspired by a situation I saw a lot of my friends get in to. I really like reading magazines about science, you see, and when people fall in love, they make this kind of drug in their bodies so they become addicted to each other physically. “ (Februari 1996)
“What inspired the song “Hyper-Ballad”? The critical time in a relationship, which usually happens after 3 years, and I can see all around me with all my friends. It’s got to do that when you fall in love it is so precious to you, you never know this might be the last time, so your behaviour towards the loved one becomes very sweet and you go somewhere else to be aggressive. Because I believe that all people have got both sides. So you end up having to unload your aggressions at a bar or by throwing cuttlery off cliffs. So you can come back to your loved one, kiss him sweet on his cheek, and say happily, ‘Hi honey.’ “ (November 1995)
“I guess that song is about when you’re in a relationship and it’s going really well and you’re really happy and maybe you have given up parts of yourself. To fall in love and be in a relationship for a long time is like giving a lot of parts of you away, because the relationship becomes more important than you as individuals. It’s a bit of a tricky balance. I think everyone in a relationship needs to know not to forget themselves…” (Augustus 2002)

Selma Songs: I’ve seen it all
Björk heeft enkele jaren geleden gespeelt in de film ‘Dancer in de Dark’. Van daaruit is er een album gekomen ‘Selma Songs’. Het onderstaande nummer is een stukje uit de film.

The lyrics to ‘I’ve Seen It All’ were not written by me, but it was a project that took three years and I actually enjoyed to leave me and be obsessed with this lady called Selma. And I sort of fell in love with her, to be honest. I felt honoured to be the one who was expressing her heart.
Volta: Dull Flames of Desire
Sinds afgelopen maandag is de nieuwe videoclip, “Dull flames of desire”, uit.
Deze video clip is gemaakt door drie verschillende nieuwe directors. Het verschil tussen hen is duidelijk te zien in de clip, hij bestaat uit 3 delen die er helemaal anders uit zien.
Mijn persoonlijke favoriet is het eerste deel, maar kijk natuurlijk zelf wat jij er van vind!
